What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal Fillers are comprised of a naturally occurring complex sugar, which resides within the skin and other areas of the body. The role of dermal fillers is to attract water, thereby hydrating, plumping and smoothing the skin.
As we age and with environmental stressors, there is the depletion of this complex sugar, as well as gravitational changes to the underlying fat pads in the face. This creates a dry, lax skin, accentuating lines and wrinkles and contributing to facial volume loss.
The aim of dermal fillers is to restore and plump areas of depleted volume, soften facial contours and rejuvenate the facial appearance. However dermal fillers may also be used in younger patients to enhance or define areas of facial attractiveness.
Areas Treated with Dermal Fillers
Upper Face Area
The most eminent feature of the face is the eye area. As we age, depletion of volume occurs which creates shadowing, lines and wrinkles, causing us to look tired and older than we feel. The tear troughs (hollowing) beneath the eyes may be softened with dermal fillers, restoring a smooth, refreshed appearance.
Mid Face Area
The facial areas which can be treated using dermal fillers include the cheeks, which is a common area for volume loss due to the gravitational changes of the underlying fat pads.
Dermal filler treatment of the cheeks is not only used to restore volume, but may also help to soften the crows feet, and provide support to the lower facial areas affected by gravity. Defining the apex of the cheek also enhances femininity and facial attractiveness.
Lower Face Area
Dermal fillers may also be used to rejuvenate the mouth area, by hydrating and plumping vertical lip lines and reinforcing the lip border; an area quite commonly affected by collagen depletion and sun damage, as well as lifting the corners of the mouth affected by gravitational changes.
Dermal filler treatment of the lip body offers hydration, enhanced volume and femininity to the face.
The nasolabial folds and jowls are also common areas affected by gravitational changes, which can be softened using dermal fillers to help rejuvenate the lower face.

AM I A CANDIDATE?
Most people who opt for dermal fillers are experiencing the effects of premature ageing, however fillers are also used to give your lips more volume or correct minor deformities in the nose as an alternative to a nose job. Fillers are not suitable if you are pregnant or breast feeding.
BEFORE THE TREATMENT.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to treatment to minimize the risk of bruising.
- Schedule your appointment at least 4 week before an important occasion or special event to allow any localized bruising to subside.
POSSIBLE SIDE-EFFECTS
Filler injection can lead to problems. Contact your practitioner if you have any of the following complications.
- Infection, redness, swelling, or pain after the first day.
- Allergic reaction
- Severe bleeding and bruising.
- Lumpy skin surface after treatment.
DURING TREATMENT
For some fillers, your skin is first numbed with a local anesthetic. Your practitioner then uses a needle to inject the filler under the skin.

Swelling usually dissipates within 48 hours. If your lips were treated, swelling can last up to a week.
- Gentle washing is allowed a few hours post treatment.
- For 6 hours post treatment, avoid touching the area, strenuous exercise, and alcohol.
